Everyone in school right now is either dealing with midterms this week or are finally relaxing on Spring Break. Except me. I had my midterms weeks ago (unusually early) and still have a few weeks to wait for my Spring Break.
That doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy though! On the contrary, I have been so busy that I haven’t been able to keep up my goal of 2 posts per month- sorry!
So what have I been working on if I don’t have midterms this week or Spring Break to plan (it’s a staycation for me this year)?
For starters, I have been working hard at my senior thesis. I’m writing about Welsh artist Gwen John (that’s one of her paintings below!) and her vision of interiority. It has been so much fun to research her life and work but the writing part has been so hard because, well, I want it to be perfect.
I didn’t technically need to do a thesis. At my university, art history majors have three choices when it comes to fulfilling certain credits before graduation. We can 1) intern somewhere artsy, 2) write a thesis, or 3) study abroad.
Back in 2016, I did a short internship at the Art Institute of Chicago that could have counted, and I studied abroad last semester in Florence which defintely fulfilled that requirement.
So why did I choose the hard work and stress of writing a thesis???
Because when I apply for grad school this fall, I’m going to need a writing sample to send in with a minimum of 15 pages. I’ve NEVER had to write anything that long. I don’t want to send in a paper that isn’t good, just because I wrote something last second to turn in. This way, I will have an appropriate length sample that has been carefully written and scrutinized by my thesis advisor and second reader. (Plus, it’s doubling as my term paper for one of my seminars so it’s a win-win!).
Another reason I’ve been so busy is that I started a new job as a hostess. It’s a fun new restaurant in Fulton Market called Punch Bowl Social- I recommend checking it out if you’re ever in Chicago!
I’ve also been applying for a ton of art-related jobs and internships to help beef-up my CV for grad school apps.
AND I FINALLY GOT ONE!!!
I start this Monday at the Conservation Center, where I will be researching the objects they are working on and writing articles about them for their monthly newsletter. I am going to get PAID TO WRITE ABOUT ART.
I’m over the moon with excitement if you can’t tell 🙂
I’ve also been working on adding new items to my Etsy shop (I’ve had 3 sales so far, woohoo!). Be sure to check it out because a lot of these items are one-of-a-kind in my store!
Anyways, I’ll try to write more often. I have so many things I want to write about! But I’ll definitely keep you all posted on my thesis- and my new internship!
Have an awesome St. Paddy’s Day weekend!
